Google Adsense: Don’t Overlook This Ad Network

by Savvy Writers on January 22, 2010

Google Adsense is an ad network open to almost every blogger.  Yet, it seems not many bloggers manage to achieve the income potential this network can create for them.  Here are three simple changes I made that helped me increase my Adsense income:

Adsense for Feeds

Including Adsense to your feeds allows you to make money by delivering targeted ads to your RSS feed subscribers as well as to some of your email subscribers.  To set up the feed ads, log in to your Adsense account, under Adsense set up click on Get Ads.  Then Click on Adsense for Feed and follow the easy instructions there.

Ad Position/Location

Location, Location, Location!  As with any other ad network, the higher you place Adsense units on your page the more page views the unit will get and the more income it will help you generate.  Previously I had my adsense units placed well below the fold.  I have since given my units premium placement and moved them up.  After doing so I noticed an increase in my Google Adsense income.

Ad Unit Size

Size Matters! The bigger the unit the better with Adsense.  I notice a distinct increase in my Adsense income once I made a 300×250 unit the top Adsense unit on my blog.  While this size unit has worked well for me, I also think it’s important to mix size units and sizes.  Exposing your readers to blocks of advertising that are the same size can be overwhelming and put them off.  Break off the ad units by mixing up size and types.  On my website right  now I display squares, skyscrapers and leader boards large and small.

Maximizing Adsense on your blog is a trial and error process.  When you implement a change make sure to give it at least a two weeks trial period.  To better measure results make sure to name the channel of your units so you can easily identify the outcome of the changes you are making.   Through trial and error I have managed to average over $3 eCPM over the last ten months.  I hope some of these tips help you increase your results as well.

Are we going to get a tutoria post on what exactly CPM is again? I know it was mentioned during the savvyblogging Tweet Par-Tay, but my poor mind is so muddled from all the information! I think many will benefit from knowing this site is a central location for all the tips and info discussed last night. You could put linkage on the right for the categories of the topics discussed! Just an idea… ;)

Thank you ladies for all that you are doing! I wish I could meet ALL of you at Blissdom! You all need to give yourselves a pat on the back for coming up with this idea to create a savvyblogging community!

CPM is basically how much you are getting paid for every 1,000 pageviews or impressions your site gets. So for example, you get 40,000 page views per month and the estimated CPM for adsense was $3. You can expect that month to make around $120 from adsense income.

I agree!

I’d love an explanation of CPM (blah, blah, blah) put into some plain my-brain-is-fried-because-I-lost-braincells-while-pregnant & I-stay-home-with-a-three-year-old-all-day terminology.

I just LOVE this blog!

My adsense doesnt load on the side of by blog but will under the posts. Has this happened to anyone else?

Nicole, you can only have 3 active adsense ads per page. So, if you expand your post and that ad shows, it will automatically make one of the other ads go blank (assuming you have 4 codes). The same thing happens on my page.

I am very frustrated. I have been turned down twice for Google Adsense. I am not sure why my site is not a good fit! Please take a look and let me know. My site has been in existence since November 2009 , but it really launched January 3. I have about 330 fans on facebook and according to sitemeter I get an average of 216 visits per day. I am also considering moving my website from blogger to wordpress or another service. Any suggestions? I am welcome to any constructive criticism!

Courtney,
I’m no expert by any means, but your problem could be that you’re using a TCBOTB design. They have copyrights on most of their templates that do not allow monetizing.

Have you tried to access it from the ‘monetize’ tab from your blogger layout?

Thanks so much for helping me out today….this post was really helpful – I’ve made some changes…….do you mind taking a look? I’ve added a leader board to the top and a square between posts……the only thing I don’t like is if you are clicked on a specific post the add shows up way below all of the comments and even below the comment box….any way to change that?

I’ve also added it to my RSS feed, I hope I did all of that right.
I had only generated $30 in the past year………that’s why I KNEW something was not right!

Hey, Savvy Blogging team! I have a question for you all.

I had Google Adsense up on my blog for about a day before Bikini Lady showed up. I’m not sure what Bikini Lady has to do with saving money, but nevertheless, there she was.

Any tips on removing her? I’m a little nervous to try again lest she pop back up. :)

Kaley, did you try obtaining the url of the ad directly? Check out this post for more info on how to do that:

I’ve heard that Bikini Lady is very persistent though. Seriously, MSM couldn’t get rid of her!

Yeah…I heard that too. I will give it another go though. Thanks, Andrea!

I would love a post about some alternatives to Adsense. I use Adsense and love it, but with mulitple ads on the the same page sometimes I see all the boxes showing the same ads. Are their other reputable ad networks that are similar in style to Google Adsense?
