During my Songwriting Course with an awesome instructor in college, I learned that it was very important for any songwriter to have what is called a “Hook” Book. Any good song needs a title or phrase that “catches” the listener’s ear. This title or phrase should be interesting and easily repeated by a listener after hearing it one time. Creating a good hook or idea definitely relates well to writing for blogs.
Good content starts with a good idea, phrase or word. But these creative ideas can come and go so quickly, that as busy people we can easily forget them. That’s why it is very important to write down your ideas when they come to you. This is where the Hook Book comes in. A Hook Book is just a simple little notebook that you can keep with you for all those times that you are feeling inspired.
How many times have you had a dream or woke up in the middle of the night with an idea, and then forgot it by morning? Keep a Hook Book with you at all times: on your night stand, in your purse, car glove compartment, back pack, etc. Keep it as a friend by your side for all those hooks that you come up with and you may never lack for good content.
When you experience writer’s block, just go to your hook book for some fresh ideas. If you’ve been consistently writing down ideas, phrases and key words, then you will be ready to start with new content at a moments notice. It doesn’t even have to be a fancy book. Just grab a small notepad or notebook that is easy enough to keep with you wherever you go. I think it is also important to note that you should try to stay away from using a computer program or electronic device for recording your ideas. Computers aren’t always available or with you when inspiration hits. So grab a small notebook (you probably have a ton in your office available to use), and start writing down all your inspiring titles and ideas.
Hook books don’t just apply to songwriting and blogging. In what ways can you use a hook book in your life?

I was talking to my husband last night about how writing isn’t hard for me at all. Thinking about to what to write is the hardest part!
