The Why and How to Add the Facebook Widget to your Sidebar

by 5 Dollar Dinner Mom on May 19, 2011

I don’t bounce around online often, but a few weeks ago, I was blog hopping and noticed a few blogs with the Facebook widget in their sidebar.  Some had lots of fans, others not as many.  But what struck me was how easy it was for a reader to just click the like button and they would start getting the website’s updates to their news stream.

Having the Facebook icon among social media icons on your site is great…but readers have to see it, decide to click through and then like your page once on Facebook. The widget in your sidebar eliminates that step.

I’ve seen a huge increase in likes to the Facebook page on $5 Dinners since adding the widget to the sidebar, just below the main ad.

The How To

  • Go to your Facebook page and click on Edit Page, in the upper right hand side.
  • Then click Marketing in the left column.
  • Then click on Add a Like Box to your Website
  • Customize the colors, size, etc and click Get Code
  • Copy and Paste the code into an HTML/Text widget in your sidebar.

Now sit back, relax and watch your Facebook likes increase exponentially!

I have definitely noticed an increase in FB followers with this widget. I highly recommend it.

I love this widget and it is so easy to install, plus it makes it easy for readers to “like” your page. The problem is that is has a lot going on in the background and it can slow down your site. If you check your page with Google’s Page Speed, you’ll see that come up often under multiple categories as something that could be fixed to increase page speed. There’s a lot of complaints about it on Facebook and, so far, I haven’t been able to find any suggestions on how to speed it up or cache it. My site was fine, except during peak hours. Then it would slow to a halt, until I removed this and the small Twitter widget too.

If you find a way to speed it up, please let me know! I love the idea.

I put it in a text widget and it isn’t showing up. do you need the iframe code or the xfbml code?

I have tried your instructions, but there is no marketing option on the left-side column of the edit page. If you have any suggestions, that would be great.

Thank you,
Nancy

Facebook changed again and I don’t see the “marketplace”. I did search and found this link so people can add a facebook “like” button to their page. Hope this helps. Just change the URL to your page URL. http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box/#
