Titles are important if you want your website to rank on the first page of google or other search engines. While it might be tempting to give your post a catchy, fun title, the search engines aren’t looking for fun.
The search engines are looking for keywords, and more specifically words that are in your actual post. The first words in your title are the most important, and words like an, for, the, of, with carry no weight at all, so avoid them if you can. They take up valuable real estate in your title line.
For those of you on WordPress (and you should all be on WordPress
) remember to tag your title in your SEO tools. For those using Thesis use the Custom Title Tag, and for those on other themes use the Platinum SEO or All in One SEO plug-in to tag your titles.
If picking SEO friendly keywords is difficult, my next post will show you a tool that will help you find the best keywords for your titles and posts.

And in regard to the Blogger vs. WordPress debate… can you transfer your archive posts when you switch from Blogger to WordPress? Or do you lose all of your history.
And what do you feel are the key benefits to WordPress and why everyone should be on it? I am on Blogger and just hate to think how much would o into switching, but that is all I keep hearing from other bloggers. I had no idea when I started…

Yes, you can transfer everything over from your Blogger blog to your WP blog- even the old comments. Kacy (below) explains that well!
I’ve found so many benefits to WP (and I’m sure others can chime in with even more!). For one, WP gives you so many more options for customization as it offers thousands of plugins. For example, I currently use a plugin that recognizes when someone new is visiting my site and displays a welcome message at the top of my site for these visitors. While perhaps there’s some way I could have coded this in Blogger, I wouldn’t have had a clue how to do it. The plugin capabilities make it easier for me to customize (for free) without hiring someone. These plugins, along with other tools included with WP, make blogging much more user-friendly in my opinion, especially for someone like me who struggles to understand the technical side of blogging.
I don’t know the ins and outs of it, but I’ve also heard that WP is great for SEO. While I can’t give you hard and fast stats, I do know that my traffic from Google started to increase once I moved to WP, and interest from PR and other companies rose pretty quickly.

In order to start a site with WordPress.org, you will need to have a webhost, such as Bluehost, which typically costs close to $100/yr. After you sign up with your host you can then download WordPress.org. After you do that there is a side bar on your WordPress Administration panel that says “Tools”. You just click “Import” on the Tools sub category list and follow the instructions. Importing your blogger posts and comments literally takes 2 minutes and it is extremely easy when you know what to do.
Hope that helps!
