      Increase Your Alexa Ranking
by Andrea @ Savings Lifestyle on October 1, 2010

      Alexa Ranking

An Alexa Rank is another one of the metrics that advertisers, ad networks and PR look at to measure your site’s popularity. Since we are all about taking your Blog to a Business, your Alexa Ranking is an important area to focus on.

Honestly, I was oblivious to the Alexa Rankings until last year. It seems like there is so much information out there for who looks at what, and the good PR will look at your overall influence rather than just a number. But, after talking to Bargain Briana about how easy it was to increase your Alexa Ranking, I thought I’d experiment and try it.

One way to increase your Alexa Ranking is with the Firefox Add-on, Alexa Sparky. Once loaded, whenever you visit your own site, or other sites, it gives out Alexa juice. After subsequent visits, your ranking will slowly decrease (which is a good thing. The closer to zero you are the better).

When I did this with my previous domain name, I was under 100,000 within a month. Then eventually down to 50,000. Now that I have a new domain name, there are some things I’ve had to do to ensure my ranking comes back (and it will eventually). I fully anticipate to have my ranking back very soon!

I was out nothing, it was simple and Alexa Sparky worked!

Now, will that help me in the future? Who knows at this point. I think the more that you are established and connect in various social media channels, the better off you are. It’s just another thing that is like icing on the cake for companies who are into that information.

If you are up for an experiment, let’s try one.

This will be interesting to see how much the Alexa Sparky Add-on affects your Alexa Ranking. It really worked for me with my previous domain name. Mine is a bit of an anomoly now because of my site’s name change (and I’m tracking a different metric for Alexa). So, let’s do this:

      • Download Alexa Sparky.
      • Leave your current Alexa Ranking in the comments.
      • One month later, we will post another post to ask for updated Alexa Rankings.
At that time we’ll ask you to share your new rankings.

If you’ve gone through a similar experiment already, feel free to share your results in the comments as well. I was amazed at the results I achieved in such a short amount of time for literally doing nothing but visiting my site!

Andrea publishes Savings Lifestyle (formerly Mommy Snacks.net). Her mission is to “Save on what you need. Spend on what you want.” She’s doing that as they anticipate finally getting rid of their jacked up car.

When I first registered with Alexa in January my blog was ranked something like 1.5 millionth. Over the next four months, the ranking improved substantially to about 350,oooish. Then I switched hosting companies (my blog was hacked and the hosting company was very unresponsive). The combination of my theme and plugins however, demanded too much CPU for this new hosting company and they have been ‘throttling’ my site. My site is not large in terms of visitors and I don’t even think it’s large in terms of content but their action meant that the load time was slower because of the throttling.

That meant my Alexa ranking went in freefall from 350,000ish in April to around 759,000 in August. Since then, I’ve switched themes, dropped a few plugins and switched hosting companies. Today my ranking is 605,000 and hopefully on an upward trend.

So in the past few months I’ve learned more about hosting companies, themes and plugins than I ever really wanted to know but hopefully I can get back to concentrating on writing now. I’ll be interested to see where I’ll be in a month’s time.

I was at 1.2 mil then I added the tool bar and over a few months it dropped to close to 200,000. Then I got a new computer and didn’t put the tool bar on and I kept climbing up to 350,000. I’m slowing going back down, now that the tool bar is up.

*FYI- anyone can put in your site and get your ranking!! When you have the tool bar on, you can see where every site is ranked.

Kaley, I’m truly not sure on the theme. I was on Thesis when I installed Sparky and the drop in ranking was nearly immediate. Honestly, with any page ranking or SERP stuff, I think the theme does help since Thesis has a lot of SEO functions built in. But, I think keywords in the title and backlinking are even more important, regardless.

Not to be the naysayer, but the agreement terms to download Sparky were are a bit invasive in regards to info that might *potentially* be given to Sparky. It might be wise not to check bank accounts or other sensitive sites if you have this toolbar.

Thanks for the tip, though! If it weren’t for that, my husband and I would both employ it.

Kelly, I think they are thinking more of places you visit, but I can’t say for sure. I’ve not had issues with any of my accounts. I live online so no hacking then. It’s what happens in the stores and restaurants I don’t trust anymore! Plus, banks have a strong firewall that is very hard to pass up. Thanks for sharing the concern though.

So I downloaded the toolbar (the one from Alexa itself) and started tracking in July. My ranking went from 189420 to 114037, and my US ranking went from 73558 to 20506.

Pretty dramatic difference! However, I’m going to insert that I think it’s crazy that a PR firm would look at Alexa as a factor in whether or not a site is worthwhile. It is very clearly skewed toward sites that have an audience geared towards tech-savvy readership.

For instance, the traffic rank of savvyblogging.net is 96, 268. No idea what kind of traffic this site gets, but I’m pretty confident I get quite a bit more. :) Yet, because the readership (especially any search result hits) is more likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed, it ranks much higher.

All that to say, I am trying to increase my Alexa ranking, but it really holds no value except to the people who don’t know how it works. :)

As an aside, since we know that PR firms DO look at Alexa ranking, I’ve left a few reviews of blogs on Alexa.com. I figure if someone is going to be looking at a site’s Alexa ranking, even if you don’t have a high ranking it looks good to have five stars from reviews!

Thanks for this, Carrie! I was feeling pretty disheartened about my Alexa ranking. I feel like my lack of tech-savviness is definitely a factor in my ranking. I want to learn more about techy things, but my content is what is most important to me.
      • Carrie from Springs Bargains on October 07, 2010 at 11:47 am

Don’t take it personally. ;) It’s just that if you cater to a more tech-savvy audience (such as bloggers), they are more likely to have the toolbar installed. Since Alexa *only* counts people who have the toolbar, it’s skewed majorly towards sites that have a very tech-savvy crowd.

So, if your site mainly reaches moms who don’t typically have the Alexa toolbar installed, your ranking isn’t going to be very high. But that’s why you add the toolbar yourself to help your ranking.

(Which is why I don’t put much stock in Alexa rating since it can be so easily manipulated!)
