How To Start Offering Giveaways On Your Blog

by Savvy Bloggers on March 23, 2010

A question I have heard over and over during the past few years is: “How do I start offering giveaways on my blog?” I get the impression that many new bloggers think you must have a big blog or super secret sources in order to host giveaways on your blog.

Well, guess what? There is no super secret society one must be admitted to in order to run giveaways. Nor, do you need to have substantial traffic.

No matter the size of your blog, there are thousands of companies who would love to offer a giveaway to your readers. Seriously. And once you get started with giveaways, you’ll likely quickly find that there are many more opportunities than you have time and space for!

Here are four simple ways to get started offering blog giveaways:

1) Give something of your own away. When I was very new to blogging and didn’t know any better, I often paid for my own giveaways. In fact, I often gave away products that I personally owned and no longer needed.

While this is not the ideal, it is an excellent way to “get your feet wet” when it comes to giveaways. When you approach a company regarding running a giveaway (see next point), you’ll likely have better success in procuring a giveaway if you can show them that you’ve successfully run giveaways in the past.

If you use Swagbucks (and if you don’t, what are you waiting for?!), you might consider giving away a gift card you’ve earned through them. That way, it doesn’t cost you actual money out of pocket. And readers love gift card giveaways.

2) Approach companies and ask if they’ll run a giveaway. If you don’t have companies beating your door down to request that you do a giveaway with them, start getting proactive! Have a product or website that you love, write and ask them if they’d consider running a giveaway on your blog. It’s that easy!

Be professional, be concise, and make sure to clearly explain how running a giveaway on your blog would be a win for their company. I’d recommend that you share your blog stats with them, link to a recent giveaway you’ve run, and share why you feel their product or website is well-suited to your blog’s audience. In addition, I’d state upfront two ideas you have for a giveaway but also convey that you’re open to other ideas they might have.

3) Ask for a contact from another blogger who has run a giveaway. Has one of your blogging friends run a giveaway with a company that you think would also be a great fit for your blog? Ask them if they’d be willing to pass along their contact at that company to you.

Now, please don’t abuse this idea! Most bloggers are happy to share their contacts with you, but don’t expect or demand that they must share all their contacts with you as most bloggers work hard to establish relationships with PR and Advertising companies. But if they are willing to share, this can be a great way to get a direct contact for a person at a company or PR Agency which is likely interested in running giveaways on blogs.

4) Respond to a press release with a giveaway pitch. Once you’ve been blogging for a little while, you’ll often begin to receive press releases about new products from companies and PR Agencies. If you’re interested in the product and think it would be a great fit for your blog’s audience, consider writing back and pitching a giveaway. Companies are sending out a press release to garner buzz for their product, so they’ll often bite on a giveaway pitch.

Do you offer giveaways on your blog? If so, how do you get started doing so?

Crystal, you could not be more right! Whenever anyone asks how I get to do the fun things I do or giveaway the tickets I have, there’s just one answer…I ask! I use the same principle I grew up with, “You never know until you ask!” When you show people how you can help them, they are often very excited to help you as well!

Crystal, Very nice article. I appreciate you writing that! When I first started out, I would earn gift cards by doing surveys and give those away. Now, more then not, I am the one who contacts companies. Once I’ve contacted them, they usually come around again with another great giveaway offer. I am on my second round for both Wilton Cake Supplies and Carolina Pad…both companies were contacted by me first! So you are right, no matter what size your blog is, there are companies out there that will want you to promote your products. I even have done a lot with local businesses…what better way to start. I’m doing a local photographer this coming Saturday….Once again, thank you for all you do! I love your blog and visit around five times a day, and follow you on Facebook!! lol….

Great advice! I just started blogging 2 months ago and had my first giveaway about a month ago (which I paid for with my own money). Asking people you know who sell things (crafts, purses, avon, etc) was an idea I got from another blogger and it worked for me. I am hosting my 2nd giveaway and I didn’t have to give money for it! Whoo hoo!

I too started out with giveaways from my own pocket. But you can be Savvy about it. I’m excited about future projects. Thanks for the tips. Ask your creative friends and family to donate giveaways too. It’s great exposure for them as well. There’s nothing like sharing something you love as well.

Great advice! :)

I always send thank you e-mails to my PR reps after my giveaways, just to tell them how much I appreciate their hard work!

Great recommendation! I try to follow-up and tell them how many entries there were along with a link to the giveaway. They love to hear numbers like that!

One other idea that I have done alot. I contact people who own Etsy accounts. I have already done (3) Giveaways for people who make homemade crafts. These giveaways have gone over VERY well!!!. Also, Avon, or other people who sell from Home Businesses love bloggers. I’ve done two Avon giveaways and One For Osborne Books!! Just some ideas!!! These are a win win situation. Because it gives these little companies some BIG Visibility!! Try it!! I know you will have great success!!!

I have one more idea!! LOL….I have made a close friendship with two bloggers. When we get leads for giveaways, we give the company each others blogs!! Another words we refer each other to companies that we do giveaways for. Most of the time, the companies want more bloggers!!! ~ This works well for all parties. Just be careful not to commit to more than you have time for!! So start looking for a blogger or two to share contacts with! Works very well!!! ~ Deb

I love to offer giveaways any time I do something special on my blog, like when I launched my new site or next month, with my super cool series (you already know and the announcement’s coming Friday!). I’ve done a lot of what you suggested — contacting companies and such. I would also suggest contacting Etsy shops or other smaller companies who don’t have a ton of exposure. I contacted several “big” stores in one industry only to be ignored, told “we don’t do that” or “we’ll put you on the waiting list.” But then I started contacting smaller companies and some were only too eager for the exposure! It worked out great. Plus, you’ll find that some companies are much more eager to work with bloggers than others. (Personally I don’t get why some companies don’t…bloggers have very loyal audiences and if they offer a positive review and giveaway it could really drive a lot of traffic to the business!)

You’ll be surprised how many resources are available for giveaways. I had a Twitter follower offer up (2) FREE $10 gift cards. I could keep’em for myself, but I plan to pay it forward by giving it to (2) of my readers. I’ll also link back to the young lady that gave me the gift cards, hopefully sending some traffic her way.

Lisa @ Simplified Saving March 23, 2010 at 10:59 am
These are all great ideas! Also, don’t try to do too many giveaways at once or too many reviews. You’ll end up finding yourself overwhelmed with the amount you have to do. Start small unless you have lots of extra time on your hands!

I had my first giveaway last month. I’ll more than likely be giving something away again, soon. I’ve used the first of the month and a goal along with it for the giveaway. For instance, the April 1st giveaway is only if we get 300 FB fans…we’re at 212 right now!

I started with a giveaway from my own business as a an Independent Consultant. I then did a giveaway for a friend with an Etsy store. I have now ventured into contacting other Etsy store owners. Not sure if I want to venture to big companies or not.

I have a question: what do you think about setting conditions for the giveaway? I see some bloggers asking you to subscribe to their blog and follow them for an extra entry…I feel like if you want someone to follow you, you should earn it, not “bribe” them with giveaway entries. I’d be interested to know what people think about this…

[Reply]

Crystal @ Money Saving Mom Reply:

I think that anything which requires “strings attached” should be an additional entry. I offer this on some of my bigger giveaways with success. I think it’s a great way to create more buzz and also give a little extra incentive for becoming a follower on Twitter or an email subscriber.

This is exactly the advice we have been looking for. Thank you! We have been racking our brains about how to get great giveaways for our blog. We did think that we would have to wait until we had more readers than our current eighty-ish to get a company to be interested. Thanks!!!

I’m hosting a giveaway right now for a narrow niche (non-verbal people w/special needs) and am a little surprised that I don’t have any entries. I’ve tweeted, posted on Facebook, and tweeted some more. Is it ok to ask others to help promote a giveaway? I don’t want to let my sponsor down.

I know that it’s pretty much expected on “giveaway sites” to post a disclosure statement…..but remember that even though it’s a personal site and you’re only offering occasional giveaways….you still need to disclose. You don’t want to mislead your readers. :-)

I am actually doing coupon giveaways from my Entertainment Book. There are a lot of high value coupons in there and though I am not getting an overwhelming response, it isn’t too bad and I didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket.
Thanks again for your tips, have I told you that you are AWESOME! :)

I’m also of the mindset that there should at least be one “no-strings-attached” way to enter a contest. Then for extra entries, go ahead and add in following, re-posting, etc.

(There is a giveaway currently on my blog, if you want to check it out. http://www.honeyandcheese.com/2010/03/23/giveaway-secrets-of-beauty/ )

I started out by giving away all of the coupons that I knew I wouldn’t use from several weeks’ worth of Sunday newspapers. People loved it! Then companies started to contact me about giving away their products. Once I gained a little more confidence, I even approached a company that had sponsored a giveaway on another blogger’s site. I liked their product, and they were happy to work with me. That just emboldened me! Now I’m not afraid to just ask.

This post contains great advice!

Find a company that you love, maybe something you’ve recently purchased or are looking to purchase. Contact that company and say, “Hey, I love your products and was thinking of featuring them in a blog post I am writing. Would you be interested in teaming up with me and offering my readers a giveaway of that product as a part of that post?” If they say “no”, then no big deal. It never hurts to ask! And featuring products you already love will appeal to your readers as your post about the product will be authentic and personal! Your readers will appreciate it!

Oh gosh I actually bought and paid for and paid to ship my first few giveaways becauseI knew no better. I had written a couple of companies and been turned down because of my traffic being so low, and I was afraid that giveaways were the only way I was gonna increase my traffic. Well, it worked so I don’t regret it but I wish I had waited a little longer and been a little more patient. I might not have been out quite so much money and maybe have had better things to give away. Luckily I gave away prizes that I won through Swagbucks, survey companies and other things that were just lying around the house. Nothing that used but definitely a lot of things that people loved. Giveaways are the best way to get your blog some quick traffic, as long as you get the word spread about them.

We’re running our first giveaway now, with TerraCycle, they were looking for some environmentally friendly bloggers to post about their promotion with Walmart this month. Today when I was at an eco-fair, I mentioned to a (small, fair-trade) coffee company that we had a blog and we were interested in promoting environmentally aware products and services and she gave me her card and told her I should contact her because they like giving products to people to promote them like that!

Now we are trying to be sure we understand all the conventions about giveaways. Does anyone ever run into legal issues? For instance, do you have to limit your entrants to people in the US, or over 18 or anything? We have readers from other countries periodically, so I want to be sure we don’t do anything that could get us in trouble!

thanks!

Good tips! I’m hosting my 2nd giveaway right now & I had to “ask” for both of them myself. Right now, thru 5/7/10 CSN Stores $40 egift you choose the prize. One entry per person so it’s quick & easy but not getting me any subscribers sadly enough. I’ll have to rethink that for the next one.

I have run give away contests in the past and have had great response from them on certain websites. It is true, if you get a hold of the product manufacturer you are wanting to do the give away with they will usually jump right in as long as you are professional about it. The main thing the manufacturers look for when approving product to be given out is How You PROMOTE it. In other words no spammy stuff.

I am not a lawyer and will not offer legal advise, however I do know there is a difference between a give away and a enter to win. If it is a true “Give Away” and stated as such, the only thing you need to do on your end is let everyone know your rules. If it is an” Enter To Win”, you must give details and disclaimers on the odds in chances to win. It’s all about the wording.

It’s always best do a search on legal disclaimers for give away and/or enter to win.

Hope that helps:) Great Post BTW.
