How to Add Post Titles to Subject Line in Feedburner Emails

Feedburner, the email subscription service run by Google, recently added the “Email Branding” feature.  This feature allows you to customize the subject line of the daily email that is sent through Feedburner to email subscribers.

To customize the subject line of your daily email, follow the steps below:

  1. Login to Feedburner.
  2. Click on the feed you wish to customize.
  3. Click on the “Publicize” tab.
  4. In the left sidebar, click on “Email Subscriptions.”
  5. Finally, click on “Email Branding.”  The page should look like the one below.

To add the title of the latest post to the subject line, enter${latestItemTitle} – Website Name into the box at the top.  On this same page you can also add your site’s button in the “logo URL” box, as well as customize the fonts and colors of titles and links in your email.

Once saved, the new email subject lines will show the most recent post title from when your newsletter is sent out.

Top line is “pre”-customization and bottom line is after customization of the subject line.

Subscribers will appreciate that they can see at least 1 of your post titles in the subject line before opening the email!  If you are a deals blogger who posts several times a day, attempt to have a “HAWT” post with a catchy title up just before your email goes out…as this will encourage subscribers to open the email and see all the deals!

Thank you for the tutorial! It sure helps to see screenshots of what you are talking about! I like the idea of having a catchy title for your last post before the e-mail goes out. I will start implementing that.

I have a question. I use feedburner but for some reason my readers are not getting their emails. Do you know why? Or how I can fix it? I thought I set it up right, I followed the instructions, but they are not being sent. Also, my new posts are not being linked to Feedburner and I went to my edit page to link it but it is not working. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am so excited that this blog exists! I can use this now as a reference. I am a beginner at blogging and the questions I have and the information I need seem to be overwhelming. This is so great. Thanks.

What a great tutorial. Feedburner isn’t always the most intuitive tool out there.

I particularly like this approach to customizing the title of the e-mail because it helps the messages stand out in people’s inboxes. With so much e-mail from every possible source flying in daily, it can be hard for people to prioritize what they want to read first. By including the title of the post in your message subject, it helps people get a glimpse of what they can expect from the post and give them more of a reason to open and read the message. As a bonus, the same things you to do to apply SEO to a post will help with e-mail open rates as well.

I am haveing trouble with this for some reason in the subject of my e-mails you actually see ${latestItemTitle} – rather than the title of my post. Any idea what I have done wrong??

Not sure how to help Dana! You might try setting things back the way they were, and then try again with ${latestItemTitle} tomorrow?!?

Hi there. I, like the above commenter, am having issues w/ Feedburner and I wonder if there are other free services that I might try…or if I should just try a paid version. I got the title of blogs to import to email subscribers OK, but none of my email subscriptions are being tracked by FB, but RSS ones are. It worked for one day and then stopped. Then, when unsubscribing, the ${latestItemTitle} shows up as the title of my blog.
Also, I customized the subscribe email to readers, but the generic one is still showing up. Ugh.
Maybe I have to try all over again?
Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the tip. I could make the change. Now waiting for the new email to be sent out to see whether it works.
