How to add links with a keyboard shortcut

by Carrie from Colorado Bargains on October 26, 2010

Frustrated with having to interrupt your typing flow to pick up your mouse to click the button to add a link in WordPress?  You can do it from your keyboard, no mouse needed.

Use the shift + arrow keys to highlight the string of text you want to link, then click alt + shift + a.  The Insert/Edit Link dialog box will appear and you’ll be able to add your link!  Press “enter” on your keyboard once you’ve insert the URL and you’ve just added a link without lifting a finger off your keyboard.

You can use a similar shortcut to de-link an existing link: just put your cursor anywhere on the link and hit alt + shift + s.

Any idea how to make this work on a Mac? It keeps beeping at me when I try!

Glad you figured it out! I’m on a Mac, too, and it works OK – depending on what your keyboard says, it may technically be option + shift + A/S.
