If you don’t have a google alert set up to monitor your name, blog name, or personal brand set one up today. By setting up a google alert you are notified, either as it happens or in a digest, when your search term is mentioned on the web.
Sign in to your google account and go to www.google.com/alerts.
Type in your search terms in the first box. Below the first box is a drop down menu that allows you to select type of search: blogs, web, news, etc, the frequency of search, the amount of results, and email address for delivery.
You will notified via email when your search terms are found on the web. Google alerts is a great way to find out who is talking about you or your blog. It is also a great way to monitor your influence on the internet.

Do you have to put the ” ” around the search item?

With everything else I have set up I can’t believe I didn’t have alerts set up!! So glad I saw this tweet. Now I’ll be better informed…I always wondered how people knew I had linked to them lol

I use Google Alerts and love it – though, for monitoring your “reputation”, I recommend using multiple sites. I use Step Rep – I get completely different results and information. I think the difference is that Google Alerts only alerts you when they index a page with your search terms? Not sure how Step Rep works but I find a lot of mentions via Step Rep that never show up on Google Alerts.

Thanks for the tip! Just to make sure I am doing this correctly, do I put my blog name in the search query? That is what I did but I just wanted to make sure.

Hi,
I have been trying to use the “contact us” form here to send in a question and I can’t get it to go through. It keeps saying the contact form has invalid input. I’m no sure if it’s something I am doing wrong or if there is a problem with the form. Just thought I’d let you know.

Great post! I had never heard of this before (and I’m an avid Google product user). I can’t wait to see what types of things I can learn with these alerts!
