Difference Between Visits and Unique Visitors

by Carrie from Colorado Bargains on June 27, 2011

Are you quoting the wrong numbers in your media kit?

A lot of bloggers confuse visits and unique visitors.  Though they sound similar, they are, in fact, very different!

A visit is counted every time someone visits a website.  If you visit SavvyBlogging.net three times a day, each time, you’d count as a visit.  You would personally represent three of their total visits for that day.

However, unique visitors are only counted once during the same time period.  If you visit SavvyBlogging.net three times in one day, you would only be one unique visit.

Since many bloggers have people visiting a few times a day to see if anything new has been posted, your visit numbers are usually quite a bit higher than unique visitors.

If you’re looking at statistics over the course of a month, remember that each person (or really, computer/IP address) is only counted once, regardless of how many times they visited your site throughout the course of a month.

Many companies want to know your monthly numbers of pageviews and unique visitors, but I see a lot of bloggers giving out pageviews and visits, not unique visitors.  Make sure you’re giving them what they ask for so you’re not inadvertently miscommunicating your stats!

I personally don’t feel that unique visitors are necessarily that much more important than visits.  I believe you’re more influential among the people that visit you every single day each month than people that just pop in once or twice, but those dedicated readers are only counted once in the unique visitors stats!  Still, it’s what many companies request, so be prepared to provide that number upon request and make sure you give them the right one!
